like I tried to. To

I'm happy that some of you didn't know me back then, Kar Imma
be real with you guys.
I straightened my hair.
I thought that would make me fit in
better with the Caucasians.
It didn't work.
It looked horrible.
I had people touching up
my hair all the time, patting
me this, that, this, that. And I let them.
I thought it was cool.
I like that validation. And I was in a sunken place.
And a lot of people are still in that sunken place. And
some will forever be in that sunken place.
But if you're watching this and you can relate to any aspect of what I'm saying, my
point is this. I outgrew
that phase. I call it the whitewashed face.
But I've come to a point in
life where I'm
unapologetic about what I stand for.
Either you hate it or you love it. But let's be real.
The world's a messed up place
and I'm not gonna pretend it's not.
And I hope you won't either.
And let's just go on this journey together and see
where we end up.
The room
The last thing I recorded on the first day, and the most personal.
Growing up in Norway, a predominantly white country, I tried to fit in — to be one of them. I straightened my hair because I thought it would help. It didn’t. It looked horrible. People touched my hair all the time and I let them, because I liked the validation. I called it, on tape, a sunken place, and I said a lot of people are still in it and some always will be.
Then the line with the pun in it: I outgrew that phase — I call it the whitewashed face. I’m unapologetic about what I stand for now. Either you hate it or you love it. The world is a messed-up place and I’m not going to pretend it isn’t.
In April, on another tape, I had talked about Black girls straightening their hair for job interviews as a sociological fact. Later that year it turned out the fact had a face, and it was mine. The last line of the day was an invitation: let’s go on this journey together and see where we end up. We did. This is where it went.
