Symptom and sickness
The words
I have come to realize that situation is not about me
in any way, shape or form. It's about a problem much larger than that.
What happened to me is not an isolated incident.
And I need to stop looking at it as an isolated
incident and just put it into context. Cah.
It's a sickness.
That's the real problem.
That was just a symptom, but the sickness is the root of it all.
And that sickness
is institutional racism.
The room
This is the turn in the finished video — the moment I stopped telling my own story and put it in context. I said what happened to me was not about me in any way, shape or form. It was not an isolated incident. It was a symptom. The sickness was the root of it, and the sickness has a name: institutional racism.
I still think it is the most useful thing I did in 2021: refuse to let a personal event stay personal. A symptom treated as the whole disease is how systems keep their shape. It is also the sentence that made the rest of the video possible; everything after it — the history, the colour, the money — is the context I promised the camera here.
