Am I really free?
The words
When I go to celebrate my team winning
a football match or my team winning a cup, to this
day I still have to think what type of
people are going? What are the demographic of people that are there?
What's the police saying?
What am I wearing?
Am I drawing attention to myself?
Like, all of these thousands of thoughts that go through my mind.
How am I speaking?
How am I present?
Like, I'm basically trying to cater my
life so that I will not be racially
profiled, so that I will not experience, like unprovoked violence.
And if you deep that to this day we're
still shackled by the
effects of slavery.
So when people tell me slavery is over, I'M like, is it really?
Because am I really free in this country when I can't even go
to a football match and celebrate my team winning?
Is that freedom?
The room
This is the question that became the film’s title, the first time it went on the record. It went up on YouTube in the autumn of 2021, in the video I introduced as my first ever.
I was describing a small ritual: going out to celebrate my team and first running a checklist — who’s going to be there, what the mood is, what I’m wearing, how I’m speaking, whether I’m drawing attention to myself. Thousands of thoughts, all of them in service of not being profiled. I called it being shackled by the effects of slavery. And then, because people kept telling me slavery was over, I asked: is it really? Am I really free in this country if I can’t even go to a match and celebrate my team winning? Is that freedom?
I didn’t mean it rhetorically and I still don’t. The film asks it again, and so do I. I asked it on camera in 2021, and three more times in a single afternoon in 2022. This is where it starts. Nobody wrote it for me. I said it before anyone asked me to.
