And to those of you that maybe
grew up in a predominantly white area or like
me, maybe have family that is white
and you feel like maybe a disconnect
or you try and explain what's happened
to your white friend, and they. And they don't understand, or
they gaslight you or they even silence
you. To those people,
one thing I want. One thing I want to tell you is bun them. See through
their white fragility.
See through their white tears. See
through the white guilt. Be.
Be your unapologetic self. And if people don't accept
that, move on.
And it's that simple.
Okay, then I landed.
The room
A few seconds before this, you can hear me ask whether I can land it. I had been saying ‘let me land’ since April — my way of telling whoever was listening that the thought was nearly home. Here I actually say it when it’s done: okay, then I landed.
What I landed was for the people I grew up among. If you grew up in a predominantly white area, or, like me, have family that is white, and you’ve tried to explain what happened to you and been met with blank faces, gaslighting or silence: see through it. See through the white fragility, the white tears, the white guilt. Be your unapologetic self. If people don’t accept that, move on. It’s that simple.
It isn’t that simple, and I knew it wasn’t. But some advice has to be said simply so that it can be carried. I was talking to a younger version of myself as much as to anyone watching.
