So to anyone out there that's ever been silenced
for speaking out to anyone out there
that's ever experienced any way, Any form
of racism to anyone
out there that is trying to explain to their white
friend, like, yo, I don't like it
when you say the N word, or, yo, I experienced racism, Tedehi,
like, this is what happened to me. And you get silenced, like,
hold your truth and
stay true to your truth because you know that you
know that you experienced racism in that situation,
or you know that your family member did,
and you do not need anyone else's approval for that to be true
because you know what happened.
And we need to stop
seeking validation from our oppressor when
we have the facts right in front of us.
The room
Late in the first day, after a long run of takes, I spoke to everyone who has ever been silenced for speaking out — who has tried to tell a white friend that a word hurt, or that something racist happened, and been talked over. Hold your truth, I said. You know what you experienced, and you don’t need anyone else’s approval for it to be true. And then a sentence I didn’t say in any other take: we need to stop seeking validation from our oppressor when we have the facts right in front of us.
It is the whole argument of this archive in one line, recorded long before the archive had a name. The receipts were already in front of me; I just hadn’t started laying them out.
