You grow out of trauma
The words
No, no. But let me land. Because it can be very understandable. Because think about it.
Like, sometimes, let's say I was speaking to, like — I heard my friends, like, talk about this.
Like, he was trying to, like, get, like, a cab to stop for him, but no cabs would stop for him.
But when his wife did it, who was white, the cab immediately stopped.
And in situations like that, it would be nice to have someone that would automatically clock that
and that would just act upon it.
Yeah, I don't know. I don't blame people that connect.
Like trauma does connect and it doesn't necessarily always need to be negative.
When we look at trauma, we always think negative, but it's not necessarily negative.
It can be a beautiful thing because you grow out of trauma.
And to grow out of trauma together with someone that's experienced very similar things
can be such a beautiful thing.
And I understand why people would bond over things like that.
The room
Let me land — my own phrase for finishing a thought, and I had to use it twice that night because the room kept moving. Then I landed it.
A friend told me he could not get a cab to stop for him. His wife, who is white, put her hand out and the cab stopped immediately. In a situation like that it would be good to have someone beside you who clocks it without being told. So I don’t blame people who bond over that.
Trauma does connect, and it doesn’t only connect negatively. We hear the word and think damage; there is also what grows out of it. Growing out of trauma with someone who has lived the same thing can be a beautiful thing. It is the most generous sentence I said all night, and I still mean it. The archive is full of me making arguments. This is me making room.
