Dear white people: stop accepting apologies on behalf of Black people. It isn’t your place. I kept watching the same thing happen online — someone gets called out for racism, apologises, and white commenters rush in to absolve them: it’s okay, we know who you are, you didn’t mean it. Why are you commenting? Stop commenting.
It is a small point and I made it quickly, because it’s the kind of thing you only notice once you’ve read enough comment sections, including your own. Forgiveness belongs to the person who was wronged. It isn’t transferable, and it isn’t a public service. I was twenty-two and I had already watched it happen enough times to be tired of it.
