Christianity as a religion has become.
So, yeah, that's. It's really problematic,
I have to admit that.
I feel like where I draw the line, though, is that I
know my God is not whitewashed.
The room
The interviewer changed the subject without warning — are you religious? — and I answered in four words before I had time to be clever: I believe in God. Then, as if I needed to file it properly: I consider myself a Christian.
The harder question followed: is Christianity whitewashed? I didn’t defend it. I said the facts are there, that people still picture Jesus as a white man, that the religion most people meet has been painted over. And then I drew the one line I have never moved. The religion may be whitewashed. My God is not.
That distinction is older than this video and it has outlived everything that happened after it. It is the difference between an institution and the thing the institution claims to hold. I learned to make it about churches first. I would need it later for a great deal more.
Immanuel is my middle name; it means God with us. I didn’t mention it on tape. I didn’t need to. You can criticise the house and still live with the one it was built for.
