Grenfell
The words
Like,
even Grenfell Tower, and I'm gonna
keep saying it, because we still need justice for the
victims and their families.
Like, we are waiting definitely.
For those of you that don't know what Grenfell is or what happened, is
literally a block in London that burnt
down completely because
the people in charge wanted to save money. Faulty
insulation, dangerous, hazardous cladding
that literally killed so many lives.
And those lives were majority people of color.
And even now, there's so many other buildings like it
in the UK where people are living, which literally have
the same conditions or worse, but it's still out there and the government haven't done anything.
SEALED
It would. No,
it would have already been fixed.
Like, firstly, it wouldn't even have been built in the wrong Way to start off with.
And if it was, the government would have fixed it like that.
SEALED
There's a lot. There's a lot. In Grenfell's case,
there are so many other buildings in the UK that
are literally below standard.
Right.
When I say below standard, I mean
as in you can die because it's
built so poorly.
There can be a fire at any point in time, even as we're filming this right now,
because there's literally housing with
even worse conditions than Grenfell. But the government is not trying to fix it.
But let me tell you that if that was Westminster or if that was
some beautiful white area, I mean, as far as beautiful can be
in the uk, that would have been fixed.
The room
Grenfell Tower burned on 14 June 2017. Seventy-two people died in a block in west London that had been wrapped in cladding that should never have gone near a building people slept in. Nearly four years later, filming my first video, I kept saying its name because I didn’t want it to become a date.
What I said was plain. The people in charge wanted to save money. The people who died were mostly people of colour. And there were other buildings like it, all over the country, with people still living in them. Then the interviewer asked whether it would have happened in Westminster, and I gave the only answer I was certain of: it would have been fixed already — it would never have been built wrong in the first place.
I was not a housing expert in April 2021. I had a camera, and I could count who lived where. In September 2024 the public inquiry published its final report and concluded that every one of those deaths had been avoidable. That is what I mean when I say the world sometimes agrees with the tape, late.
