Humble
The words
One thing I find interesting is that people
will praise Bill Gates
and call him humble because he's just wearing a white T shirt.
They'll be like, wow,
like, he's one of the richest people in the world and he's dressing simple.
But they miss the part where his
white privilege allows him to dress simple.
Because people will still
deem him as valuable. Yeah, people will still deem him as important
even though he's quote unquote underdressed.
Whereas a black person just wearing simple clothing.
Nobody in their right mind
in this colonized society would think that black person is successful.
That's so problematic.
The room
The interviewer counted me in and I delivered this in one breath, which is why it sounds like a closing argument.
People praise Bill Gates for wearing a plain white T-shirt. They call him humble. What they miss is that his whiteness lets him underdress: he is read as valuable before he opens his mouth, whatever he’s wearing. Put a Black person in simple clothes and nobody in this colonised society would think they were successful. I said so, and then I said: that’s so problematic.
On 27 August 2026 I published a whole essay on this argument, BILL GATES IS NOT HUMBLE, and quoted the version I said alone to camera later in 2021. This one is older — April 2021, in the first video I ever made. The receipt I thought I had turned out to have a receipt of its own.
He can wear nothing and be read as everything; I can wear everything and be read as nothing. I wrote that sentence this summer. I said its ancestor here.
