What white identity?
The words
What white identity? Like,
white culture does not exist
for me like this.
When people say that, I kind of get confused because my. My mom is Norwegian.
So I can relate to
Norwegian culture, but white culture in itself is not a thing.
There's no unified white culture.
So, I mean, I can
say I'm proud to be black,
but to say I'm proud to be white,
that's literally. Proud of what?
Racism, colonialism, imperialism.
If anything,
like me having black
heritage, but also having Norwegian heritage,
it puts me in a unique position because
one side of my family are literally the oppressors.
But then the other side are the oppressed. And I'm
literally in that conflict
in the middle. That
conflict is within me, and that's a burden to carry.
But it's. It also gives me a different perspective.
The room
The question was whether being pro-Black undermined my white identity. I answered with a question of my own — what white identity? — and I meant it literally.
My mother is Norwegian. Norwegian culture is a culture; I can relate to it. ‘White culture’ is not one. When I say I am proud to be Black I am claiming a people. If I said I was proud to be white, I asked on tape, proud of what? Racism, colonialism, imperialism — that is all the phrase has ever had in it.
And then the sentence the rest of this archive keeps circling. One side of my family were the oppressors. The other side were the oppressed. I am in the middle of that conflict; it is inside me; it is a burden to carry, and it is a perspective nobody standing on only one side can have.
A few weeks earlier, alone, on a voice note, I had described myself as that conflict in a body. Later that month, on a podcast sofa, I would explain it as the child standing in the middle of all of this madness. This is the version in between — said out loud to another person, on camera, in a video I was about to put on the internet with my name on it.
