Because I'm just like, okay, how can people with. How
can people with confidence say that the UK is not racist when the
guy leading the country
is a racist, is racist? And not only racist, he is
literally a white supremacist, an imperialist, and
has literally condoned colonialism in Africa.
The room
The interviewer asked for my full opinion of the Prime Minister, and I gave it without softening anything: racist, imperialist, and not the innocent type people take him for. I listed what he had written and said in public — about Africa, about Africans, about Muslim women — and said that any celebrity would have been cancelled for one of those lines, and that the only thing more embarrassing than a leader saying them was a country agreeing not to notice.
Everything I cited was public by then, most of it in his own columns — the Africa piece from 2002, the letterbox line from 2018. On tape I said the Africa column was from a couple of years before; it was nineteen. The words were exactly as I quoted them. I was twenty-two and a marketing student, and I did what you do with any brand: I read its published copy back to it.
How can people say with confidence that the country isn’t racist, I asked, when the man leading it is? That question is the reason the passage exists.
