Heed my warning
The words
Take care of your loved ones honestly
and do not rely on a system
that is built to break
the spirit of the
working class, the spirit of people of color.
Don't rely on a system like that to heal your loved ones.
Heed my warning.
That's all I got to say.
The room
The last thing I said on the recording, before thanking Kwajo.
Take care of your loved ones, I said, and don’t rely on a system built to break the spirit of the working class and the spirit of people of colour. Don’t rely on a system like that to heal your loved ones. Heed my warning. That’s all I’ve got to say.
It is a warning, not a slogan, and I delivered it like one — tired, certain, finished. Everything I had said for forty-four minutes had been evidence. This was the instruction that followed from it: look after your own, because the people paid to look after them may not. Fifteen months earlier I had asked why the people paid to protect us weren’t protecting us; by now I had an answer I could say in one breath.

DivergenceThe transcript garbles two words; the captions hear 'a system', and so does my next sentence. 'A system' is printed.
