The same afternoon, forty-three minutes later, at the end of everything I had to say, the question came back without anyone asking it.
But now I’m free, I said. But am I really free? And then the part that turned it from a question into a forecast: even when I escape that, do you really think I’m going to be free?
I didn’t know then how long the answer would take. I know now that the question was the right one, and that coming back to it three times in one afternoon is what a person does when the answer isn’t settled. It still isn’t, which is why there is a film.
This is the last time I asked it that day. The film’s title is not a slogan. It is the sentence I kept returning to in 2021 and 2022, on the record, in my own voice.
