Summer 2022, Westfield Stratford City. Before we started I was still directing — telling Kwajo, who was holding the camera, to film himself as well as me, to alternate. Then he asked me how I felt, and I answered before I had decided how much to say. It feels like freedom. But then I’m like: am I really free?
Half a minute later I came back to it and made it bigger than me. Am I really free? Are we all even free in this country?
The first time I asked it on camera was in 2021, alone, in a video about a country that wasn’t innocent. This time I wasn’t alone, and it still came out as a question. I had been asked how I felt, and the honest answer was a question.
He had asked me something else. I answered with the title of the film.
