Black women have been missing

The words

Where you at, though?

Because why are the people that are paid to protect us not protecting us?

And when I say us,

I also specifically mean black women. Because, let's be honest,

black women have been missing in this country. Black

women have been slaughtered systematically in this country.

But I'm not hearing anything about it.

And anytime a white woman goes missing,

like, it's all over the news.

And I'm not trying to talk down on Sarah Everard.

And what happened to her was disgusting.

She was murdered brutally.

This is not. Okay.

SEALED

This is not.

This is not comparing tragedies, but this is

pointing out the fact that when a white woman dies, there is public outcry.

When a white woman goes

missing, everyone in this country is literally searching for her.

However, when a black woman goes missing

in extremely similar circumstances, it's silent.

SEALED

If we look At Biba. And if we look at her sister Nicole,

they were literally killed. Yeah,

Their bodies were found in a park. But

what's interesting is that

it was the family, right?

The family found the bodies. It was

the family search that found the body.

It wasn't even the police search.

So you're telling me that the police are not even doing their job, so the family have to take it upon themselves

and find their murdered daughters.

Do you know what the police did after?

SEALED

Police officers literally took selfies with

the dead black women's bodies.

The room

The conversation had reached the people who are paid to protect us, and I asked the question everything I said after it tries to answer: why are they not protecting us — and by us I meant Black women specifically.

I said Black women had been going missing and dying in this country and I was not hearing about it. I named the case everyone had heard of and said clearly that I was not comparing tragedies, only coverage: when a white woman goes missing, the country searches; when a Black woman goes missing in similar circumstances, it is silent. Then I named the ones nobody around me was naming: two sisters murdered in a park, found by their own family’s search rather than the police’s, and the officers who took photographs with their bodies.

I said all of this in April 2021 from what was public. That October the police watchdog found the service given to their family in the days after they went missing unacceptable; that December the two officers who photographed them were jailed. I kept the names on tape because the silence I was describing was the silence around the names.

Corrected — A second case in this passage is sealed. On tape I said a young woman had been murdered; in May 2022 a coroner ruled her death an accident and said third-party involvement could not absolutely be discounted. Her family's campaign was about how little was done to find out, and that part stands. My word went further than the record, so it is not on this page.

Testimony, not fabrication.
