On this journey together
The words
That's — that's an interesting question.
And I feel like with that, I have to also cut my family some slack
because we are on this journey together.
And also, as the world is evolving and as we're all just gaining more awareness
and as I'm also learning more about my culture and my heritage,
like, I'm more aware because as a child,
you sometimes don't even know how to approach your parents about certain topics.
It can be race. It can be anything.
Like, it's not necessarily something you want to talk to your parents about.
So what I would say is it's been a process,
and there have been times where I've been like, yo, like, this is what I'm going through.
But there's been other times where I also have just been silent and not told my parents,
even my dad, who is black.
The room
I was asked how my family handles race, and I answered with the thing I find hardest to say in public: I have to cut my family some slack, because we are on this journey together.
The world keeps changing and so do I — I am still learning my own culture, my own heritage, and I know more now than I did. As a child you don’t always know how to approach your parents about certain things. It can be race. It can be anything. There were times I told them what I was going through, and times I stayed silent — even with my dad, who is Black.
I give institutions no grace at all. I give my family some. That is not a contradiction I intend to resolve. The point of a record is to be exact about who owes what, and a family is not an institution: it is people learning in public at their own speed, me included.
