But at the end of the day, if you're not anti racist, then we
have a problem because you
are literally directly benefiting from the racism
your ancestors have perpetrated. You are benefiting
from slavery by just being born, literally.
So as a white person, if you are not actively educating
yourself and actively standing up against institutionalized racism,
I am sorry. But then you should feel ashamed.

Three questions about white people in a row, and three answers that are really one.
First I cleared the ground: being pro-Black does not make me anti-white. Pro-white has historically meant anti-Black; that doesn’t mean the reverse has to follow in the same footsteps. Then the interviewer asked whether white people should feel ashamed for what their ancestors did. I said I’m not in the business of telling anyone how to feel — and then I was precise about when shame is owed. You benefit from what was done by the fact of being born. If you are not actively educating yourself and actively standing against it, then yes: you should feel ashamed.
The third answer was for the people who say they don’t see colour. I can see it; so can they. Pretending otherwise doesn’t solve anything. It lets it keep happening with better manners. So unless you are actually anti-racist, I said, shut up.
That last line is blunt and it stays on the record exactly as it was said. I was twenty-two and loud about the manners, but I was right about the mechanism. The charge was never about who anyone is. It was about what they do with what they inherited.
