So obviously my mom is white.
Like, I don't need my mum to say, I completely understand everything you're going through.
I don't need her to say that. That's not what I need.
In a moment when I'm hurting, like, sometimes I'll come home,
and me and my friends, we've just been chilling and, like, something's happened with the police.
We've been racially profiled. And I come home, I'm fuming.
Like, I don't need my mom to be like, oh, I know exactly how you feel.
That's the last thing I want to hear, honestly.
I just — I just need her to listen and be like, you know what?
I love you regardless. I love you regardless.
That's — that's what I need in that moment.
And that's what she has provided.
And that's regardless of it, whether she's black or white.
The room
My mother is Norwegian and white. By April 2021 I had already come home more than once with the particular anger you carry when you and your friends have been stopped for being what you are, and I had already learned what I did and did not want from her in that hour.
I did not want her to understand. I mean that precisely. There is a version of “I know exactly how you feel” that lands as theft — it takes the one thing that happened to you and makes it a thing that happens to everyone. What I wanted was smaller and harder: listen, and then say the sentence. I love you regardless. Twice, if it helps.
She provided it. I say so on the tape, and I say it does not matter whether the person providing it is black or white. I still think that is the most useful thing on this reel, because it is not an argument about race at all. It is an instruction for anyone who loves someone who gets stopped.
The host asked me a question about family support, and this is what came out. I had not planned to say it. The tape keeps the things you did not plan.
