The middle of all of this madness
The words
Ok, let me land.
Okay, so in my case, I'm thankful and I'm grateful for some of the experience I've had.
However, I do see where it can be an issue.
And what I mean by that is when two people from entirely different cultures come together
and let's say they actually get children as well,
they're bringing other people into their business,
and if their business potentially is a mess, they're bringing their children into a mess.
And that's just in general, in any type of relationship.
But when it comes to two entirely different cultures, it becomes even more heightened.
Like you get a whole nother dimension.

But the reason why I say it can be even more heightened
is that because it's two differing often stances or perspectives.
Like the child is going to be at the intersect of that.
So the child is going to be like, have 50% of their heritage is from one place
and 50% of the heritage is from another.
And when you then have two entirely different views
and then when sometimes racism comes into play
and then when colorism comes into play
and just discrimination in general,
that child is at the — in the middle of all of this madness.
So that's what I mean by problematic.
The room
I had a habit on that sofa of saying “let me land” when I could feel a thought getting away from me. This is the first time on tape I say it, and the thought I land is the one I have been explaining to people my whole life.
I was asked, more or less, whether mixed relationships are a problem. I am the child of one, so I answered as the child. Two people from two cultures don’t just marry each other; they enrol a third person who never applied. If the two of them are a mess, the child inherits the mess. If the two of them are from different worlds, the child inherits both worlds and belongs, on paper, to neither. And if racism and colorism are in the room — and they were always in the room — the child stands at the intersect of all of it. In the middle of all of this madness.
Five weeks before this, alone, on a voice note, I had said the same thing in a different register: I am the living embodiment of that conflict. This is that sentence with the working shown. I like that the analytic version came second. The feeling was already there; the sofa gave it a structure.
I have been asked since whether I still believe children of mixed marriages are “at the intersect”. I do. The difference now is that I have three institutions’ worth of paperwork that agrees with me, in their own words. That is what the rest of this archive is.
