That's not a contradiction
The words
It's. It's actually, it's funny that you mentioned because people
have literally come for me saying, how can you talk about oppression?
How can you be an activist?
And it looks like
you're wearing designer.
That's not a contradiction.
One thing is, obviously, I want to look nice,
but if we look at the deeper meaning,
black people are oppressed.
And when an oppressed group does not
hold intrinsic value within a society,
we are going to look at objects, materials
that people deem as valuable and place that upon ourselves.

but it's not a coincidence that you see that a lot of black people will
wear a gold chain or will wear
diamonds in their ears.
And it's literally because society says that we are not good enough. So
we find stuff that are good enough and we place that upon ourselves.

It kind of doesn't matter whether you see it or not, because at the end of the day.
Okay, that's what's happening.
It's a fact that when you
are not deemed valuable by society, you will try and seek
affirmation by whether knowing it or not. Like
finding objects and materials that will place value on you like
you want to.
Everyone wants to be seen. At the end of the day,
like, let's be real. People would be like, oh, I don't care what other people think. Like,
let's be real.

And especially when you have not been seen for generations,
there's a whole nother dimension.
It's not a coincidence that
we spend on what we spend on. I don't know
if that was English.
The room
I was wearing designer, and the interviewer pointed it out on camera, on purpose, because it was the question already sitting in my comments: how can you talk about oppression dressed like that?
I said it wasn’t a contradiction, and I explained it in the language I was studying at the time. When a group is denied intrinsic value by the society it lives in, it reaches for objects that society has already agreed are valuable and places them on its own body. The gold chain, the diamonds in the ears, the label — not vanity, translation. Whether people do it knowingly doesn’t matter; it happens. Everyone wants to be seen. When you haven’t been seen for generations, there’s a whole other dimension to it.
Then I asked, out loud, whether that had even been English. It was. It was also the thesis I carried until August 2026, when I finally wrote it down: the coat is not vanity; the coat is a sentence.
The idea is older than the camera. In a university essay in 2020 I had written about markets that misprice value when the signal and the substance are judged by different people. This is where the argument left the page and walked into my wardrobe.
