Growing up in Europe and all over Europe,
literally, with a colonized education system,
that's what makes it harder to identify.
Because I do not know
one. Like. Like,
I do not know, like, one side of who I am
because it's so whitewashed and it's so.
I don't.
They don't teach me about, like, African kings and queens.
They teach me about Shakespeare.
They don't teach me about
even, like, the genocide in Congo, but they will
talk about the Holocaust. Like,
and I'm not trying to compare tragedies, but I
think it's so important for black people, and
even people of color in general to, like, know their history. But I feel
like I've been robbed from knowing that side of me.
The room
The interviewer asked whether I struggle to identify, being in the middle. I blamed the syllabus, and I still do.
I grew up across Europe inside what I called, on tape, a colonised education system. They taught me Shakespeare. They didn’t teach me African kings and queens. They taught the Holocaust and said nothing about the genocide in the Congo. I said on tape that I wasn’t comparing tragedies, and I wasn’t. I was comparing curricula. One half of me was on the timetable. The other half wasn’t taught at all.
Robbed is the word I chose, and I chose it deliberately. A theft is not an absence. Something that belonged to me was in the room, and someone decided I would not be given it.
Everything the film is about happens after this tape. The first thing ever withheld from me was a history lesson.
