I just don't get it.
I honestly don't get it.
The report is whitewashed and
the report in itself saying
that the UK is not institutionally racist.
I feel like that kind of proves that it is.
Because an institutionally
racist society is not going to admit that it is.
The room
Days before we filmed, the government’s race commission had published its report — the Sewell report — concluding that the country was not institutionally racist, that it should be regarded as a model for other white-majority countries, and, in its own words, as a beacon to the rest of Europe and the world. The interviewer raised it; I asked whether the country was not embarrassed.
Then I did the sum out loud in the phrase I would go on using for years: the math is not mathing. The British Empire was one of the most racist empires this world has seen, if not the most; a country built on that cannot be the example the rest of the world follows on racism. And a society that is institutionally racist is exactly the society that would commission a report saying it isn’t. The report proves the thing it denies.
It is the first place my signature phrase appears in this video, and it arrived as arithmetic because that is how the thought felt: numbers that refused to add up.
