And if you do decide to go to, like, a psychologist or whatever,
one thing I want to recommend, and I will say this with Chesters,
if you're a person of color,
hold up. This is important.
If you're a person of color, I
beg, go to a psychologist that's
also a person of color. Or if you're black, listen,
go to a black psychologist, because
in your safe space, you shouldn't
be catering and you shouldn't be,
like, subscribing to freaking white supremacy
or just white fragility or, like, tone
down your blackness or your culture
or what you've experienced to the person that's supposed to understand you.
The room
The advice I gave at the end of that stretch was practical. If you are going to talk to someone about what racism has done to you, and you’re a person of colour, go to someone who is a person of colour too — if you’re Black, find a Black professional. Your safe space should be the one room where you don’t have to cater, translate, or tone down what happened so that the person listening can cope with it.
Healing isn’t neutral ground; who is sitting opposite you changes what you are able to say. It is advice I would give anyone today, in the same words. I said it with a camera pointed at me because I wanted the advice to outlast the video.
