Light skin is not a personality
The words
But you know what?
Yeah, just touching on that. Like, one thing I do want to
say before we end is, like, I can
see how, like, mixed people have been extremely
problematic in general and just also in the course for
just like, fighting for the
rights of black people.
Like, sometimes I see some mixed people and I'm like, you're
literally just a roadblock. Like, you're a stumbling block. And I do.
I just want to acknowledge that as a mixed person myself, I see
how other mixed people are just a bit tapped in the head
and just literally destroying progress that's been made.
And I don't say that lightly, but when I see, like, people
that refer to themselves as light skins and how, like, they're, for example,
like, let it be their personality.
Yeah, yeah,
Literally, like, being light skin is not a personality.
Like, I just don't understand how I
can see your Snap username and it's like,
SEALED
Or like, it's like, okay, we get it.
You have two parents from two entirely
different cultures. But that cannot be your whole personality.
There needs to be more depth to that.
And then if you then are okay,
you refer to your. You refer to yourself as light skinned,
then don't look down to people that you perceive to be dark
skinned or brown skin. Do
you get what I mean? I think
that's so problematic.
And that's like. We're literally like putting black
people up against each other and just separating ourselves.
The room
The last thing I wanted to say before we ended, and I said it about my own group first. Some mixed people have been extremely problematic — in general, and in the fight for Black people’s rights. Sometimes I see one and I think: you’re a roadblock. A stumbling block.
I said it as a mixed person myself, because accountability that starts with someone else isn’t accountability. Being light-skinned is not a personality. Two parents from two cultures is a fact about you, not a character. And if you are going to call yourself light-skinned, you don’t then get to look down on people you have decided are darker.
That is the part I care about: the ranking. We put Black people up against each other and call it identity, and the people who built the ranking watch us keep it alive. It is the bluntest I am on this tape, and the target is my own reflection first.
